Diagnose a Weak Campaign Before You Replace It
Locate the broken stage—delivery, attention, intent, conversion or customer quality—before rebuilding.
When performance declines, teams often change the audience, creative, bid strategy and landing page at the same time. The account may recover, but the team learns very little. Diagnosis should move through the funnel in order.
1. Check delivery
Is the campaign spending? Review approval status, audience size, bid constraints, budget, billing, schedule and placement eligibility. A campaign cannot create downstream results if it cannot enter enough auctions.
2. Check attention and relevance
Look at reach, frequency, video retention, click-through behaviour and comments in context. Weak attention can indicate a tired concept, unclear promise or poor fit with the placement. Strong clicks with weak post-click behaviour may indicate curiosity rather than useful intent.
3. Check the post-click experience
Confirm that the page loads correctly by device and market. Review message match, form errors, checkout behaviour, speed and the visibility of the primary action. Compare analytics with platform click data to identify tracking or loading gaps.
4. Check conversion quality
Move beyond the form or purchase event. Are leads reachable and qualified? Are orders profitable after refunds and fulfilment? Is one creative generating volume but attracting the wrong customer?
5. Check what changed
- Campaign settings, budgets, bids or conversion goals.
- Website releases, tag changes or consent configuration.
- Offer, pricing, stock or sales follow-up.
- Competition, seasonality, market events or creative frequency.
Keep a change log and test the most likely cause with the smallest useful intervention. A disciplined diagnosis protects good parts of the system while focusing effort on the real bottleneck.
