Give Every Advertising Channel One Clear Job
Build a channel plan around customer behaviour instead of asking every platform to do everything.
Channel planning becomes confusing when every network is expected to create awareness, capture demand, close sales and prove the entire return on investment by itself. A better plan gives each channel a defined role in the customer journey.
Map the jobs before allocating budget
Google Search can capture existing intent. Meta and TikTok can create demand with strong creative and broad distribution. LinkedIn can reach professional audiences using job, company and industry context. YouTube can demonstrate a product or build memory at scale. Native and programmatic media can extend reach into publisher environments.
These are starting roles, not fixed rules. The correct mix depends on the offer, buying cycle, market maturity, creative resources and measurement quality.
Separate discovery from capture
Demand-capture channels often receive too much credit because they appear near the final action. Demand-creation channels can look inefficient when evaluated only on last-click conversions. Use consistent naming, assisted-conversion analysis, lift testing where possible and market-level comparisons to understand how the parts work together.
Set a useful scorecard for each role
- Demand creation: qualified reach, attention, audience growth and incremental branded interest.
- Demand capture: impression coverage, query quality, conversion rate and acquisition value.
- Consideration: engaged visits, content depth, return visits and sales-stage movement.
- Retention: repeat purchase, reactivation, customer value and churn reduction.
Budget should follow the constraint in the system. If search demand is already fully captured, the next unit of growth may need better creative and wider reach. If social creates traffic but the landing page fails, buying more impressions will amplify the leak.
A connected plan makes channel decisions easier because every platform is judged against the job it was chosen to perform.
