Stop Optimising for the Cheapest Conversion
Cheap results can hide weak customers. Build bidding and reporting around the value a conversion creates.
A low cost per lead looks efficient, but it can quietly train a campaign to find people who submit forms and never buy. The real goal is not the cheapest conversion. It is the strongest business outcome the available budget can produce.
Define value before choosing a bid strategy
Start by separating the actions that matter. A qualified sales conversation, completed purchase and newsletter signup should not carry the same value. For ecommerce, revenue and margin can provide the signal. For lead generation, use a practical lead score based on fit, intent or sales-stage progress.
If exact values are unavailable, begin with sensible proxy values and improve them as more sales data becomes available. Google’s official guidance similarly recommends assigning meaningful values to different conversions before using value-based bidding.
Close the loop with sales data
Platform dashboards see clicks and online events. They rarely see the complete customer journey unless the business sends later outcomes back. Connect the CRM, order system or offline conversion process so campaigns can distinguish a qualified opportunity from an unresponsive enquiry.
Review performance by campaign, audience, creative, landing page and final customer quality. A source with a higher initial cost may produce a much better close rate and lower customer-acquisition cost.
Use a decision ladder
- Confirm that the conversion event fires accurately and only when intended.
- Separate primary business outcomes from secondary engagement events.
- Assign values that reflect revenue, margin or lead quality.
- Give the bidding system enough stable data before making frequent target changes.
- Judge the campaign against business value, not a single dashboard metric.
The strongest account is not the one with the lowest visible cost. It is the one where media, measurement and commercial reality tell the same story.
